How to use CBD for Your Skin

Today, we are looking at health from a slightly different angle. Whilst our focus at Wunder Workshop is looking at how our diet and lifestyle improve our overall health and wellbeing, there are certainly wellness rituals that you can utilise to improve your skin topically.

Now, when we launched our Turmeric CBD oil, its primary application was to be consumed for the pain and anxiety benefits that these two herbs are renowned for. However, this dynamic duo has also been making waves in the beauty world for good reason. Yep, you read that right. We’re talking about more than health crazes here; we’re delving into the science-backed benefits and real-life applications of incorporating CBD and turmeric into your skincare routine.

So grab your favourite mug of Tea and settle in – it’s about to get interesting!

Cannabidiol (CBD) for your skin:

First up, let’s talk CBD. Short for cannabidiol, CBD is one of over a hundred cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Before you start picturing psychedelic experiences, hold up. CBD won’t get you high; that’s the responsibility of a compound in cannabis called THC - and you won't find any of that here. Instead, CBD boasts a myriad of potential skincare benefits without the mind-altering effects. How? Well, it all comes down to its interaction with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in our bodies.

Our ECS plays a crucial role in maintaining balance (homeostasis) within our bodies, including our skin. When applied topically, CBD can potentially help regulate oil production, soothe inflammation, and calm irritated skin. Whether you’re battling acne or dealing with sensitive skin, CBD might just become your new skincare superhero.

5 Application for CBD in Your Skincare Routine:

  1. Acne Management: Acne is a common skin condition characterized by inflammation, excessive sebum production, and bacterial growth. CBD has gained attention for its potential to address these underlying factors. Research, by Oláh et al. (2014), suggests that CBD exhibits sebostatic and anti-inflammatory effects, helping to regulate sebum production and reduce inflammation associated with acne.

  2. Anti-inflammatory Effects: Inflammation is a key player in various skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. CBD has been studied for its potent anti-inflammatory properties. Studies indicate that CBD can modulate the body's inflammatory response by interacting with the endocannabinoid system and other signaling pathways, thereby potentially reducing inflammation and soothing irritated skin.

  3. Skin Sensitivity and Allergy Relief: Individuals with sensitive skin or allergies may benefit from CBD's soothing properties. CBD has been shown to have calming effects on the skin, potentially alleviating redness, itching, and irritation. Additionally, CBD's anti-inflammatory properties may help mitigate allergic reactions by reducing inflammation and preventing histamine release.

  4. Anti-aging and Wrinkle Reduction: As we age, our skin undergoes changes such as decreased collagen production, leading to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. CBD's antioxidant properties may help combat the signs of aging by neutralising free radicals and reducing oxidative stress. Moreover, CBD's potential to regulate sebum production and promote skin hydration can contribute to a more youthful complexion.

  5. Pain Management and Muscle Relief: Beyond skincare, CBD topicals are also used for localised pain relief and muscle relaxation. Research suggests that CBD may interact with cannabinoid receptors in the skin and peripheral nervous system, influencing pain perception and providing relief from conditions such as arthritis, muscle soreness, and neuropathic pain.

Using Turmeric for Skincare:

But wait, there’s more! Enter turmeric, this golden spice has so much to offer for your skin, and we have covered this before in another blog post which you can find here. Turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. When used topically, turmeric can help brighten the skin, fade dark spots, and even out skin tone.

When combined with CBD, turmeric’s benefits are synergised and elevated. CBD’s ability to enhance the absorption of other ingredients means that turmeric can penetrate deeper into the skin, maximizing its effectiveness. It's a dream team - they bring out the best in each other.

How to use our Turmeric CBD Oil:

Incorporating both CBD and Turmeric into your skincare is simple, as we have combined the two in our Regenerative Golden Drops.

Here we have incorporated 1000mg of potent CBD isolate (no THC) with organic, Sri Lankan Turmeric Extract. These two active ingredients are blended with a regeneratively-grown, biodynamic olive oil from Mallorca and the delicate fragrance of orange leaf essential oil from wild-harvested orange leaves.

We harvested 60kg of orange leaves to create this artisanal essential oil in a traditional alembic. Now, I can tell you that 60kg of leaves is a lot of leaves, and the pure essential oil that was extracted brings a wonderfully bright and uplifting fragrance to the final blend.

The rich olive oil is best applied as a few drops onto freshly cleansed skin, use either the pipette or simply rotate the bottle (with your fingertip covering the top!). Apply to your face and neck, or wherever you feel it is needed the most. Twice a day to maintain a nourished and healthy complexion.

With their potential to soothe, nourish, and rejuvenate the skin, it’s no wonder they’re gaining popularity among beauty influencers and practitioners everywhere. So why not give them a try? Your skin might just thank you for it.

We used a few scientific resources to gather information to write this blog post. Please see details of these below. Of course, if you have any questions then send us an email!

  1. Oláh, Attila et al. "Cannabidiol exerts sebostatic and antiinflammatory effects on human sebocytes." The Journal of Clinical Investigation vol. 124,9 (2014): 3713-24. [DOI: 10.1172/JCI64628]

This study investigates the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) on human sebocytes (cells responsible for producing sebum). The findings suggest that CBD has potential as a sebostatic agent, meaning it can help regulate sebum production, which is beneficial for managing conditions like acne.

  1. Vaughn, A R et al. "Effects of Turmeric (Curcuma longa) on Skin Health: A Systematic Review of the Clinical Evidence." Phytotherapy research : PTR vol. 30,8 (2016): 1243-64. [DOI: 10.1002/ptr.5640]

This systematic review evaluates the clinical evidence surrounding the effects of turmeric (Curcuma longa) on skin health. It discusses turmeric's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and its potential benefits for various skin conditions, such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
